EMF (electromagnetic field) emissions are a common question for infrared sauna owners. Here’s what our testing shows and how those numbers compare to what you encounter in everyday life.
Our Testing
During development, the Plunge Infrared Sauna was designed and validated around a 42-point EMF testing protocol. We use the Trifield EMF TF2 Meter — the industry-standard instrument for this type of testing — for all measurements.
- FIR heating panels: Average of 0.74 mG measured at 1 inch from the panel surface, and 0.50 mG at 6 inches. These figures are at or below the typical background EMF level found in the middle of an average home room.
- Tower heaters: Average of 6.9 mG at 6 inches. Tower heaters use a different heating technology than the FIR panels, which accounts for the higher reading. For context, this is still well below the levels commonly measured near everyday items like your home’s appliances.

If the Tower Heater Reading Concerns You
The tower heaters are the highest EMF source in the sauna, and the easiest way to reduce that exposure during a session is to let the sauna reach your desired temperature first, then unplug the tower heaters before getting in. The FIR panels will maintain the heat while the tower heaters are off.
