Door Magnet Seal Is Peeling Off the Glass

If one of the magnetic door strips has started to lift or peel away from the glass, it’s a quick fix. This tends to happen gradually in high-use environments where repeated door cycles and constant thermal expansion and contraction work on the adhesive over time.

What You’ll Need

  • Clear double-sided high-temperature mounting tape, 1/4” wide. Standard double-sided tape won’t hold up — you need tape rated for high heat. Look for automotive-grade or weatherstripping-rated double-sided tape. Search for “clear 1/4 inch double-sided high-temp mounting tape” and you’ll find several suitable options online.
  • Isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth or paper towel.

Reattaching the Magnetic Strip

  1. Remove the magnetic strip. Peel the affected strip away from the glass edge fully. If it’s only partially lifted, go ahead and remove the whole thing so you can reapply cleanly.
  2. Clean the glass edge. Wipe the glass surface where the strip sits with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Any residue or moisture left behind will prevent the new tape from bonding properly.
  3. Apply the tape to the glass. Cut a length of double-sided tape to match the affected area and apply it along the glass edge. Peel the protective backing off one side of the tape only, press it firmly onto the glass, and run your finger along the full length to ensure good contact.
  4. Reattach the magnetic strip. Peel the remaining protective backing off the tape and press the magnetic strip back into position. Apply firm, even pressure along its full length to ensure it bonds well.

Tip: Start at one end of the strip and press down as you go rather than trying to lay the whole strip at once. This avoids air pockets and keeps the strip from shifting out of alignment as you work.

⚠ Important: Allow a few minutes for the adhesive to set before opening and closing the door repeatedly. The bond strengthens with pressure and time.
